Advocacy Session Sparks Call to Action for Maternal Health, Focus Group Scheduled for November 30

From Advocacy to Action: Building a Holistic Support Network for Black Maternal Health in the Golden Isles

BRUNSWICK, GA — On September 15, 2024, community members gathered at Brown Butter Shoppe for an impactful advocacy session highlighting the urgent need to address Black maternal health disparities. Hosted by Opportunity Uplifted, the event featured powerful personal stories from mothers and families who shared their experiences navigating the healthcare system. "Between Life & Death: A Black Woman's Story," a short film produced by Black M.A.M.A.S. was also screened at the event.

The session served as both a wake-up call and a catalyst for action, transitioning into a broader discussion about creating a coalition to provide holistic care for Black mothers in the Golden Isles. Participants discussed the importance of integrating midwives, doulas, and mental health professionals into maternal care and emphasized the role of advocacy in driving systemic change.

“The stories we heard were heartbreaking yet inspiring. They reminded us why we’re here—to ensure that no mother feels unheard or unsupported,” said Charmaine Richardson, founder of Opportunity Uplifted. “This was more than a conversation; it was a call to action for our community to step up and create change.”

Next Step: Maternal Health Focus Group on November 30

Building on the momentum of the advocacy session, Opportunity Uplifted invites midwives, doulas, nutritionists, lactation consultants, mental health specialists, and community advocates to a Maternal Health Focus Group on Saturday, November 30. This session aims to translate stories into solutions by gathering diverse perspectives and expertise to shape a coalition that addresses the physical, emotional, and advocacy needs of Black mothers and families.

The focus group will address:

  • Developing a holistic maternal health network in partnership with healthcare providers.

  • Vetting culturally competent, credible resources for families.

  • Ensuring Black mothers remain the primary stakeholders guiding coalition efforts.

“The advocacy session was a powerful reminder that Black maternal health is a community issue that requires collective action,” said Charmaine. “This focus group is an opportunity for everyone who cares about maternal health to have their voice heard and help shape real solutions.”
